Anatomy Flashcards
What is the blood supply to the larynx?
It is derived from branches of the thyroid artery. Cricothyroid artery arises from the superior thyroid artery which is the 1st branch off the external carotid artery.
Stellate Ganglion lies in closest proximity to which vascular structure?
Vertebral Artery
Which structure in the antecubital fossa is the most medial?
Median Nerve
Cutaneous innervation of the plantar surface of the foot is from?
Posterior tibial nerve
Which portion of the upper extremity is not innervated by the brachial plexus?
Posterior medial portion of the arm as well as the shoulder.
Which structure is immediately lateral to the trachea?
From medial to lateral: recurrent laryngeal -> carotid artery -> vagus nerve -> internal jugular vein -> phrenic nerve
What innervates all muscles of the larynx with the exception of the cricothyroid?
Recurrent laryngeal
What innervates the cricothyroid?
External (motor) superior laryngeal
Trigeminal nerve provides sensation where?
Nasopharynx, hard and soft palate
Vagus nerve provides sensation where?
Below the epiglottis
Glossopharyngeal nerve (IX) provides sensation where?
Pharynx, tonsil, soft palate
Unilateral denervation of cricothyroid muscle causes…
Subtle clinical findings
Bilateral palsy of superior laryngeal nerve causes…
May result in hoarseness and/or easy tiring of voice but airway control is still intact
Unilateral paralysis of recurrent laryngeal causes…
Paralysis of ipsilateral vocal cord leading to deteriorating voice quality.
Bilateral paralysis of recurrent laryngeal causes…
(if superior laryngeal intact) can result in stridor because of unopposed tension of the cricothyroid.
