anatomy Flashcards
what are the anatomical sections of the neuro system?
spinal cord
brainstem
cerebrum
what 3 structures make the brainstem?
midbrain
pons
medulla
what does the brainstem do?
regulates heart and respiration rate
non conscious actions (autonominous)
what does the cerebrum do?
memory
motor control
what are the parts of the spinal cord?
cervical
thoracic
lumbar
sacrum
coccygeal
how many vertebrae in the cervical spine?
7
how many vertebrae in the thoracic spine?
13
how many vertebrae in the lumbar spine?
7
how many vertebrae in the coccygeal spine?
6
what is the nucleus pulposus?
the inner layer - collagen and water
provides mechanical support
what is the annulus fibrosus?
fibrous collagen disc under the spinal cord (surrounds nucleus pulposus)
provides mechanical support to vertebrae
what roots do spinal nerves have?
dorsal and ventral
where do nerves exit the vertebral column?
through the intervertebral foramen
what are the meningeal layers? (inner to outer layer)
pia mater
arachnoid mater
dura mater
what do the meningeal layers do?
wrap around the brain and spinal cord, isolating it from the rest of the systemic circulation
what are the cerebral lobes?
frontal
parietal
occipital
temporal
what is the primary function of the meningeal layers?
to protect the CNS
(mechanically - cushioning - and through an immune privileged state)
what is between the pia mater and arachnoid mater?
sub-arachnoid space
what happens in the sub-arachnoid space?
CSF perfusion of fluid
what are characteristics of the arachnoid mater?
spider-web structure, fibrous
thin & transparent
receives little arterial, venous and nerve fibre innovation
what are the 2 parts of the dura mater?
periosteal
meningeal
what are characteristics of the dura mater?
thick fibrous layer
surrounds the cerebrum
outermost layer
receives dense arterial, venous and nerve fibre innovation
{trigeminal}
what are the ridges of the brain called?
gyrus
what are the grooves in the brain called?
sulci - inbetween gyrus’
