Anatomy Flashcards
What is ATP-PC
This energy system provides immediate energy for short explosive activities like a sprint
How does ATP-PC work
It works by using ATP and creatine phosphate which is stored in your muscles
Duration of ATP
10 seconds
What is lactate system
Fuels high intensity efforts where you are working hard but not for long like- 400m sprint
How does lactate system
It works by breaking down glucose with oxygen which produces energy and lactic acid, which causes muscle burn
Duration of lactate system
30 sec to 2 minutes
Activities for aerobic system
Power long steady activities like long distance running
How does aerobic system work
Uses oxygen to turn food into energy for endurance
How long does aerobic system last
As long as you have oxygen and fuel
What are muscle spindles
Sensory receptors which are in the muscles detecting changes in length of the muscle
Key function of muscle spindles
Detect when muscles stretch
Send signals to central nervous system to not overstretch
What is vasodilation
Blood vessels widen/dilate, to increase blood flow to a certain area of the body
During running blood vessels dilate to working muscles
What is vasoconstriction
The narrowing of blood vessels, to reduce blood and increase blood pressure
During the cold blood vessels constrict to redirect towards vital organs
What is osteoblasts
Cells responsible for building new bone, to support bone growth repair and remodel
Osteoblast are active when healing from a fracture
What is osteoclasts
Cells that break down bone tissue, to help bone remodelling
Remove damaged bone when healing
What is Oxygen Dissociation Curve
Graph showing how easily Haemoglobin picks up and releases oxygen
Explain how body delivers more oxygen to tissues
During exercise muscle get more oxygen cause heamogobin lets go of more oxygen
Haemoglobin
Protein in red blood cells which carries oxygen from lungs to body also returning carbon dioxide to lungs
Transfers oxygen to muscles and removes waste during exercise
What is testosterone
A hormone crucial for muscle growth, bone strength and overall development
Testosterone levels increase naturally during exercise
What is oestrogen
A hormone used in women which helps maintain bone density, control cholesterol levels and overall health
Hyperplasia
And increase in number of muscle fibres
Enhance strength and endurance as adaption from intense exercise
Sprints or high intensity weights promotes hyperplasia
