Anatomy Flashcards
What is the role of nasal cavity
Warms, humidifies and filters air.
What makes up the nasal cavity?
Cribiform plate, Nasal cavity, superior conchae, superior meatus, middle conchae, middle meatus, inferior conchae and inferior meatus, oral cavity, 3 components of the pharynx, epiglottis, vallecula, tonsils, eaustachian tube, hyoid bone, palatine process of the maxilla, horizontal process of the maxilla and the 4 sinuses.
What is the role of the nasal cavity?
Separates both nostrils
Components of the roof in the nasal cavity?
The roof is made yo of Crista Gali, cribiform plate and the body of the sphenoid which contains the sphenoid sinus.
Discuss the lateral walls within the nasal cavity
Contains ridges known as turbinates or conchae which aid in draining and ventilating the paranasal sinuses.
And the meatuses which allows air to flow.
Components of the floor of the nasal cavity
Made up of the palatine process of the maxilla in the front and the horizontal process of the palatine bone in the back
Discuss the olfactory region within the nasal cavity
Located at the top of the nasal cavity, this area is lined with olfactory epithelium which contains neurons and sensory cilia.
What are meatuses?
Three spaces which connect the nasal cavity to the paranasl sinuses and the nasolacrimal duct.
What is the role of three superior meatus?
Turbinates and drains the sphenoid and posterior ethmoud sinuses.
What is the role of the middle meatus?
Drains the frontal, anterior ethmoid and maxillary sinuses
How does the olfactory nerve work?
Stimulates olfactory receptors with odor molecules such as odorant molecules binding to an olfactory receptor or neurone which creates an ion channel that opens and activates sensory cells. This depolarises the neuron and generates an action potential that travels through the olfactory tract to the olfactory bulb and then to the olfactory cortex.
List the components of the respiratory system in order.
Nasal cavity, mouth, oral cavity, sinuses, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi and lungs
What are the 3 regions in the pharynx?
Nasopharynx, oropharynx and larygnopharynx
What is the role of the nasopharynx?
Coats the airways and respiratory tract
