anatomy Flashcards
hip joint
bones
nerves
- synovial multiaxial ball & socket
- Made up from the acetabulum of the innominate bone ischium, ilium, & pubis & the head of femur
- Branches of the femoral, obturator, gluteal and sciatic nerves

O- ischial tuberosity and lateral lip of linea aspera
I- head of fibula
F- Knee flexion & latral rotation
- Hip extension & lateral rotation
- Long head: tibial division of sciatic nerve (L5-S2)
Short head: common fibular division of sciatic nerve (L5-S2)
Glute Max
O- gluteal surface of sacrum, illium and coccyx
I- posterior aspect of ITB. gluteal tuberosity of proximal femur
F- hip extension, lateral rotation
lateral stabilisser of hip & knee joints
Inferior gluteal nerve (L5, S1, S2)

ASIS
Situated at anterior end of iliac crest
PSIS
Trace backwards along crest, (in ladies found in dimples, in men small raised tubercles)
greater trochanter
Run hands down from middle of crest
7-10cm or bring fingers forward from hollows in sides of buttocks
ischial tuberosity
In sitting, the body rests on these and can be felt underneath this area
pubic tubercle
About 5cm above genitalia, bony ring can be felt. Pubic tubercles are about 1cm above and lateral to pubic symphysis. - Get patient to do it themselves.
joint line of the hip
Palpate the anterior superior iliac spine and the pubic tubercle find the midpoint of this line the hip joint is approximately 1.5 cm below it, inferiorly (can’t be directly palpated as deep)
