Anatomy Flashcards
What is included in the crown?
Everything from the gingival margin outside into the oral cavity
What is included in the root?
Below gingival margin
What is alveolar bone?
Bone surrounding the tooth alveolus
What is enamel?
“White shit on teeth”
Covers the tooth crown (visible portion of the tooth)
Effect barrier to heat/cold/sweet sensitivities and bacterial entrance into the tooth
What is enamel formed by and how thick is it in cats and dogs compared to humans?
Formed by ameloblasts (stops prior to tooth eruption) and cats and dogs enamel is thinner than humans.
What is cementum?
Covers the outer surface of the root
Cementoblasts produce cementum at apex of the root
What attaches to the cementum?
Periodontal ligament and gingiva
-loss of cementum prevents reattachment of the periodontal ligament
What can chronic irritation do to cementum?
Can cause hypercementosis and “lock” the tooth into the alveolar socket
What is the periodontal ligament?
Connective tissue which fills space between tooth and alveolar bone (what holds tooth into the bone).
-Attaches teeth to bone
What is the periodontal ligament composed of and what are some of its functions?
Composed primarily of collagen bundles in various shapes and orientations
-Shock absorption
-Transmits occlusal forces (bite forces)
-Supplies nutrients
-Provides tactile and proprioceptive information
What is Dentin?
Makes up bulk of the tooth
Produced by odontoblasts throughout life of the tooth
Roughly 72% mineral, 18% organic (collagen), 10% water
What do dentin tubules contain and what happens if they get exposed?
Dentin tubules contain cytoplasmic extensions of odontoblasts. If tubules exposed from losing enamel, tooth is sensitive and can become contaminated.
How will the amount of dentin change with age?
Young teeth will have very little dentin and a very wide pulp cavity. As animals grow, there is more dentin produced and less pulp cavity
How can you examine the health of a tooth?
Examine the amount of dentin, produced over the life of the tooth
What is the pulp?
Living tissues within the tooth located in the pulp chambers and root canals
What is the pulp comprised of and how is it nourished?
Comprised of connective tissue, nerves, lymph, and blood vessels
Odontoblasts line the pulp cavity and branch into the dentin tubules
Nourished via vessels entering the root canal at the apical (bottom of the tooth)
What is the gingival sulcus?
Little pocket between the cement-enamel junction and gingival margin - where stuff gets stuck. This junk will start to eat away at the periodontal ligament and bone.
What is the Mesial position?
Along the arcade, closest to the midline
What is the distal position?
