Anatomy Flashcards
What is the general pathway that food takes through your digestive system? (list the components in order)
1) Mouth
2) Esophagus
3) Stomach
4) Small Intestine
5) Large Intestine
Your salivary glands are in your mouth. What purpose does it serve?
its there so that food could move easily through your esophagus,
it also helps break down the complex molecules in carbs into simple ones (chemical transformation)
and contains antibacterial properties.
What physical transformation does your esophagus perform and why?
Peristalsis so that food doesn’t travel the wrong way. (it pushes it down)
What do gastric juices contain?
acid and enzymes
where does the digestion of protein start?
Stomach
what do the gastric juices in the stomach do?
break the food down into even smaller pieces. and also help kill bacteria.
where do most nutrients (water, mineral vitamins) get absorbed into the bloodstream?
small intestine
true or false: fats and protein get broken down in the small intestine
true
how does the small intestine move & churn food?
peristalsis
what does the liver do
secretes bile and emulsifies fat
what does the pancreas do
break down carbohydrates into glucose
where is most of the water removed from your digestive system?
large intestine
