Anatomy Flashcards
What are the boundaries of the nose?
Roof
Lateral walls
Medial wall- nasal septum
Floor- hard palate
What are the boney projections of the lateral wall of the nose called?
Conchae: superior middle and inferior
and spaces called meatuses: superior, middle and inferior
What bone are the conchae made from?
Ethmoid bone
What is the purpose of conchae and meatuses?
Slows airflow by causing turbulence of airflow
Increases surface area over which air passes
This warms and humidifies air
What are the bones forming the roof of nasal cavity?
Sphenoid
Ethmoid
Frontal bone
Nasal bone
What is the nasal septum made from?
Bony and cartilaginous
Bone: ethmoid and vomer
How does the nasal cartilage get its blood?
From overlying perichondrium
What cranial nerve carried general sensation from the nasal cavity?
Trigeminal (4)
What is the arterial supply to the nasal mucosa?
Branches of ophthalmic and maxillary artery
Arterial anastomoses in the Kisselbach’s plexus- most common source in epistaxis
Venous supply to nasal mucosa?
Pterygoid venous plexus
What is the sensory innervation for the paranasal air sinuses?
Trigeminal
Va- frontal, ethmoidal and sphenoid
Vb- maxillary
What are the borders of the larynx?
Begins at laryngeal inlet and ends at lower border of cricoid cartilage
Lies anterior to the laryngopharunx
What are the borders of the larynx?
Begins at laryngeal inlet and ends at lower border of cricoid cartilage
Lies anterior to the laryngopharynx
Outline the structure of the larynx?
Supraglottis- false vocal cords
Glottis- narrowest part that contains the true vocal cords
Infraglottis
Functions of the intrinsic laryngeal muscles?
Swallowing
Inspiration and expiration
Phonation and cough reflex
