Anatomy (1) Flashcards
what are the three parts of the large colon?
caecum
ventral colon
dorsal colon
where does fermentation mainly occur in horses?
ascending (large) colon
what separates the caecum from ventral colon?
caeco-colic valve
what separates the ventral and dorsal colon?
pelvic flexure
what separates the dorsal and small colon?
transverse colon
what does the ileum attach to distally?
caecum
what does the caecum attach to distally?
ventral colon
what are the products of microbial fermentation?
volatile fatty acids
methane
carbon dioxide
what happens to volatile fatty acids in the large intestine?
absorbed through the mucosa
what happens to microbial proteins and most volatile fatty acids in horses?
they are wasted as the large intestine is the terminal part of the GI tract so they can be absorbed by the small intestine
what are the three volatile fatty acids?
acetate
propionate
butyrate
what is propionate used for?
gluconeogenesis
what is the main site for water absorption in horses?
large intestines (osmosis, hydrostatic pressure, solvent drag)
what neutralises the VFAs produced by horses?
pancreatic secretions containing bicarbonate
mucus and bicarbonate secreted by goblet cells in large intestine
bicarbonate secreted by ileum
how do the hind gut microbes get nitrogen?
it is secreted as urea from ileum and large intestine
