Posterior
Towards or on the back of the body
E.g. Rhomboids
Anterior
Towards or on the front of the body
E.g. Pectorals
Inferior
Away from the head end of the body
e.g Lateral Collateral ligament
Superior
Towards the head end of the body
e.g Medial Collateral Ligament
Lateral
Closer to the midline of the body
e.g The proximal end of the femur joints with the pelvic bone
Medial
Further from the midline of the body
e.g Carpal bones located at distal end of forearm
Superficial
Located close to or on the body surface
E.g. Rectus abdominis are superficial to the obliques.
Deep
Located further beneath the body surface
E.g. The transversus abdominis are deep to the rectus abdominus.
Plantar
The sole or bottom of the foot
Dorsal
The top surface of the foot and hand
Palmer
The anterior or ventral surface of the hands
Cervical
Regional term referring to the neck
(C1 – 7)
Thoracic
Regional term referring to the portion of body between the neck and the abdomen (T1 – T12)
Lumbar
Regional term referring to the portion of the back between the abdomen and the pelvis (L1 – L5)
