Anatomical Terms Flashcards
Anterior/Ventral
Refers to a structure being more in the front than another structure in the body.
Caudal/Inferior
Refers to a structure being closer to the feet or lower than another structure in the body.
Cranial/Superior
Refers to a structure being closer to the head or higher than another structure in the body
Distal
regarding the limbs only, this term refers to a structure being further away from the median plane or root of the limb than another structure in that limb.
Lateral
Refers to a structure being further away from the median plane than another structure in the body
Medial
Refers to a structure being closer to the median plane than another structure in the body.
Posterior/Dorsal
Refers to a structure being more in the back than another structure in the body.
Proximal
concerning the limbs only, this term refers to a structure being closer to the median plane or root of the limb than another structure in the limb.
Abduction
The lateral movement of the limbs away from the median plane of the body.
Adduction
Movement of a limb toward the median plane of the body.
Circumduction
The action or swing of a limb, such as an arm, in such a manner that describes a cone-shaped figure, the apex of the cone being formed by the joint at the proximal end, while the complete circle is formed by the free distal end of the limb.
Dorsiflexion
Movement of a part at a joint to bend the part toward the dorsum or posterior aspect of the body. Thus dorsiflexion of the foot indicates the movement of the foot backward at the ankle.
Extension
The movement by which both ends of any part are pulled apart. A movement that brings the members of a limb into or toward a straight condition.
Eversion
lateral border of the foot turns up towards the ceiling.
Flexion
The act of bending; in contrast to extension.
Inversion
Medial border of the foot turns up towards the ceiling.
Opposition
Rolling motion of the thumb toward the little finger.
Plantar
Concerning the sole.
Plantarflexion
Extension of the foot so that the forepart is depressed concerning the position of the ankle.
Pronation
Act of turning the hand so that the palm faces down.
Rotation
Process of turning on an axis.
Supination
Turning of the palm of the hand upward.
