Anatomical Terms Flashcards
What is the anterior side of your body
The front of your body
What does superior mean in fitness anatomy?
Higher or at the top
What does inferior mean in fitness anatomy?
Lower
What does posterior mean in fitness?
To the back
What does lateral mean in fitness?
Outside of your body
What is transverse in fitness?
Straight up your body like a pole
What does medial mean in fitness?
Toward the middle
What does proximal mean?
Closer to
What does distal mean in fitness?
Further away
What is the sagittal plane?
The plane that divides the body in half in left to right halves
What is the frontal/coronal axis?
The intersection of the sagittal and the frontal plane.
What is the frontal plane?
The plane that divides your body front to back. Any movement where the legs or arms go side to side (adduction & abduction, growing movements, putter hip movements)
What is the sagittal axis?
The axis that allows the joint to move in the frontal plane
What is the transverse plane?
The plane that divides your body by top and bottom
What is the longitudinal or vertical axis?
The axis that is like a pole that goes through your body that allows you to move in the transverse plane.
Why is knowledge of the anatomical planes important to fitness coaching?
It helps you determine which movements are best for your clients.
What plane is being used by a person who sits all day?
The sagittal plane (hip flexion/tightness)
What types of movements would a person who sits all day need?
Core strength, torsal rotation, hip adduction
What type of program is typically best for all clients
A well rounded workout plan that includes movements in all three anatomical plane.
What are some common exercises in the sagittal plane?
All flexion and extension/hinge related movments: squats, deadlifts, curls, tricepts
What are some common movements that are in the frontal plane?
Standing hip adductiona, lateral raises
What are some common moves in the transverse plane?
Bench press, single isolates rear felt raises, all cable chop movements that involve twisting of the torso.
What is joint action?
Anatomical movement
What is flexion?
Any movement that decreases the angle between two joints
