Define the Anatomical position
- standing upright
- feet parallel
- head level and forward looking
- arms at side of body
- palms facing forward and thumbs pointing away from body
What makes up the axial skeleton?
- head, trunk, neck
- the vertical axis of the body
What makes up the appendicular skeleton?
- upper and lower limbs
What are the 3 planes, axes, and sections?
- Coronal/frontal - front and back
- Transverse - from the top down
- Sagittal - cutting down the middle and looking from the side
Define Flexion and Extension
Movement that occurs in the sagittal plane. Flexion refers to a movement that decreases the angle between between two body parts. Extension is the increasing of an angle between two body parts.
Define Dorsiflexion and Plantarflexion
Dorsiflexion moves the foot upwards, so that the foot is closer to the shin.
Plantarflexion moves the foot downwards, so that the foot is in a point
Define Abduction and Adduction
Abduction is the movement away from the body’s midline. Adduction is the movement towards the body’s midline.
Define Eversion and Inversion
Eversion is the tilt of the foot away from the body’s midline. Inversion is the tilt of the foot towards the body’s midline.
Define Medial and Lateral
Medial is towards the body’s midline or median plane. Lateral is the away from the body midline
Define Supination and Pronation
Supination is able to hold soup: palm facing the sky
Pronation isn’t able to hold soup: palm facing the ground
