Anatomical terminology Flashcards
Anatomical position
standard universal body reference position for all relational terms
why is the anatomical position important
locate and describe body structures in a constant, standardised way
Mid-saggital/median plane
vertical plane that passes longitudinally through body’s centre, equal right and left
saggital plane

coronal/forntal plane
vertical plane dividing body into front and back sections
transverse
horizontal plane divides into upper and lower section
oblique plane
doesn’t align with other planes
anterior (ventral)
front
posterior (dorsal)
back
medial
towards midline
lateral
away from midline
superior (cranial)
higher, nearer head
inferior (caudal)
lower, nearer feet
proximal
closer to origin
distal
further away
bilateral
involve both sides of body
unilateral
involve one side of body
ipsilateral
on same side of the body
contralateral
on opposite side of body
