Anatomical Terminology Flashcards
Superior
above, toward head
Inferior
below, away from head
Anterior
aka ventral, front
Posterior
aka dorsal, back
Medial
toward midline
Lateral
away from midline
Intermediate
between medial and lateral
Proximal
nearest to origin, smallest distance from body
Distal
farther from origin, biggest distance from body
Ipsi-lateral
same side of body
Contra-lateral
opposite side of body
Superficial
toward the surface
Deep
towards core of body
Visceral
serous membrane layer covering an organ (1st)
Parietal
serous membrane layer covering cavity wall (2nd)

Sagittal Plane
mid-sagittal: midline
para-sagittal: unequal “halves”
Transverse Plane
horizontal, divides into superior/inferior
Frontal Plane
coronal, divides into anterior/posterior
Oblique Plane
angled
Dorsal Body Cavity
cranial cavity, spinal cavity
Cranial Cavity
- formed by skull, contains brain
- layered w meninges (protective tissue)
Spinal Cavity
formed by vertebrae, contains spinal cord
Ventral Body Cavity
- thoracic cavity, abdominopelvic cavity
- separated by diaphragm
Thoracic Cavity
- formed by sternum, ribs, part of vertebral column
- consists of left pleural cavity (left lung), right pleural cavity (right lung)
- separated by mediastinum cavity consists of pericardial cavity (heart), trachea, esophagus, thymus gland
Abdominopelvic Cavity
- abdominal cavity (stomach, liver, spleen, kidneys, gallbladder, small/most of large intestine)
- pelvic cavity (bladder, little of large intestine, internal reproductive organs)
Vertebral Canal
- formed by vertebral column bones
- contains spinal cord
- layered w meninges (protective tissue)
Visceral Layer
thin, slippery, serous membrane covering organs within cavities
Parietal Layer
thin, slippery, serous membrane that lines cavity wall
Pleural Membranes
serous membranes that covers right/left lung (visceral pleura) and walls of the pleural cavity (parietal pleura)
Pericardial Membrane
serous membrane that covers the heart (visceral pericardium) and pericardial cavity walls (parietal pericardium)
Peritoneal Membrane
serous membrane that covers abdominal organs (visceral peritoneum) and abdominal cavity walls (parietal peritoneum)
Oral Cavity
tongue and teeth
Orbital Cavity
contains eyeballs, nerves, blood vessels
Synovial Cavity
found in freely moveable joints (shoulder or hip)
