Anatomical Positions Flashcards
Base of support
Part of body connected to the ground; part of body gravity is acting upon (feet, hands, top of head, etc.)
center of gravity
Hypothetical point where act of gravity acts as a weight; used to determine balance; around core/sacral vertebrae. More base of support = lower center of gravity
Planes of movement: Sagital
dividing body left and right
Medial
Middle of body
Lateral
Side of body
Ventral
Front of body, anterior
Dorsal
Back of body, posterior
Cranial
of or relating to the bones of the head that cover the brain; of or relating to the skull or cranium
Caudal
Refers to the direction or position towards the tail or posterior end of the body; the location of structures or organs in relation to the tail. For example, the spinal cord is caudal to the brain, and the rectum is caudal to the colon.
Proximal
Close proximity to the origin (close to the body)
Distal
Parts of the body further away from the center. For example, the hand is distal to the shoulder. Opposite of proximal
Superior
on the surface
Inferior
Below
Planes of movement: Frontal
Dividing body front and back (or coronal plane)
Planes of movement: Transverse
Dividing body top and bottom
