-standing erect
-facing forward
-legs slightly apart

What is the anatomical positions purpose
Describes relation of body parts to one another.
We assume a person is in this position in order to have a common set of words to describe body parts locations.
SUPERIOR definition
towards the head/upper part of a structure
SUPERIOR example
the nose is superior to the mouth
INFERIOR definition
away from the head/lower part of a structure
INFERIOR example
the chin is inferior to the forehead
ANTERIOR (ventral) definition
at or near the front of the body
ANTERIOR example
facial features are on the ANTERIOR surface of your head
POSTERIOR (dorsal) definition
at or near the back of the body
POSTERIOR example
the shoulder blades are located on the posterior side of the body
MEDIAL definition
nearer to the midline
MEDIAL example
the eyes are medial to the ears
LATERAL definition
farther from the midline
LATERAL example
the ribs are lateral to the sternum
