Anatomical Position Flashcards
What is anatomy vs physiology?
Anatomy is the human body/ body parts. Physiology is the study of how the body works.
What are 5 characteristics of the anatomical position?
Facing forward, palms facing forward, feet shoulder width apart, arms slightly lateral, feet facing forward, standing upright
Name the 11 Laymen’s terms
Medial: closer to mid line
Lateral: farther from midline
Anterior: in front of
Posterior: behind
Superior: above
Inferior: below
Superficial: closer to the surface
Deep: farther from the surface
Distal: farther from where the limb attaches
Proximal: closer to where the limb attaches
What are the terms describing movement? And examples
Flexion: bending arm
Extension: extending leg
Circumduction: drawing circle with finger
Rotation:
- interior rotation: turn head toward midline
- exterior rotation: turn foot away from midline
Plantar flexion: tippy toes
Dorsiflexion: flexing feet, toes up
Hyper flexion: joint angle more than 180
Adduction: bring arm closer to midline
Abduction: moving arm laterally
Inversion: sole of foot toward midline
Eversion: sole of foot away from midline
Opposition: thumb touching pinky
Reposition: thumb away from pinky
Pronation: thumbs or hips roll in
Supination: thumbs or hips roll out
Elevation: raising shoulders
Depression: dropping shoulders
Protraction: sticking jaw out
Retraction: moving shoulders posterior
What the the anatomical axes?
Traverse axis, anterior-posterior axis, longitudinal axis
What are the anatomical planes?
Sagital plane, frontal plane, transverse plane
Which axes correspond with which planes
Anterior-posterior axis & frontal plane
Transverse axis & sagittal plane
Longitudinal axis& transverse plane
