e.g. nose is inferior to ears
Posterior/Dorsal
Back (behind)
e.g. spine is posterior to sternum
Medial
Closer to the centre line
e.g. big toe is medial to the little toe
Lateral
Further away from the centre line
e.g. thumb is lateral to the palm
Proximal
Closer to the origin
e.g. elbow is proximal to the wrist
Distal
Further away from the origin
e.g. toes are distal to the knee
Ipsilateral
Same side of the body
e.g. right arm and right leg
Contralateral
Opposite sides of the body
e.g. right arm and left leg
Deep
further away from the surface
e.g. the heart is deep to the sternum
Superficial
Closer to the surface
e.g. skin is superficial to muscle
Supine Position
Lying down flat on your back facing upwards
Prone position
lying down on your front facing downwards
Cranial
towards the head
e.g. brain is cranial to the spinal cord
