anatomical planes and sections Flashcards
if a body is lying face down it is aka the
prone position
if a body is lying face up it is aka the
supine position
the sagittal plane is
a longitudinal plane that divides the body/organ unto left and right portions
a median or midsagittal plane is
a sagittal plane that passes thru the midline of the body/organ and divides it into EQUAL right and left portions
a paramedian plane is
a sagittal plane that does not pass thru the midline but instead divides the body/organ into UNEQUAL right and left portions
a coronal/frontal plane is
a longitudinal plane that divides the body/organ into anterior and posterior positions
a transverse plane is
a horizontal plane that divides the body/organ into superior and inferior portions
an oblique plane
passes thru the body/organ at an oblique angle (any angle other than a 90 degree angle)
define superior and inferior
superior is towards the head and inferior is away from the head
define anterior and posterior
anterior is nearer to the front of the body and posterior is nearer to the back of the body
another word for anterior and posterior is
ventral and dorsal
define medial and lateral
medial is nearer to the midline and lateral is farther from the midline;
define proximal and distal, where do they occur
they occur in the appendicular body limbs, proximal means closer to the axial body and distal means farther from the axial body
intermediate directional means
between two structures
lpsilateral means
on the same side of the body as another structure
contralateral means
on the opposite side of the body from another structure
the metacarpals are the
5 unit flat at the back of the back of the hand
