Anatomical nomenclature Flashcards
What is the median plane definition?
The midline, longitudinal plane dividing the head and torso into equal right and left halves
What is the middle sagittal plane?
Cut down the middle - symmetrical
What do inferior and superior mean?
Inferior: nearer to feet
Superior: nearer to feet
What do anterior and posterior mean?
Anterior: nearer to front
Posterior: nearer to back
What does lateral and medial mean?
Lateral: farther from median plane
Medial: nearer to the median plane
What does proximal and distal mean?
Proximal: nearer trunk or point of origin (e.g limb)
Distal: farther from trunk or point of origin (e.g limb)
What are the 4 parts the skeleton is divided up into?
- Axial skeleton (ribs, vertebrae, skull)
- Appendicular skeleton (limb bones, extremities)
- Costal cartilage (between ribs)
- Articular cartilage (between joints)
What are the 6 parts of the pelvis?
Pubic tubercle Anterior superior iliac spine (front edge) Iliac crest (top ridge) Posterior superior iliac spine Ischial tuberosity Sacrum (main middle bit)
When sitting, where does the upper body weight apply itself?
Ischial tuberosity
What are the 6 parts of the femur?
Head (ball shaped part) Greater trochanter (opposite ball shaped at top) Lateral condyle (above knee outer) Medial condyle (above knee inner) Lateral epicondyle (outer point above knee) Medial epicondyle (inner point above knee)
What are the 5 parts of the tibia?
Medial condyle (knee top) Lateral condyle (knee bottom) Medial epicondyle (outer point) Tibial crest (stretch across the front) Medial malleolus (ankle inner)
What are the 2 parts of the fibula?
Fibular head
Lateral malleolus
Which bone is lateral and which is medial out of the fibula and tibia?
Fibula is lateral
Tibia is medial
When standing, where does the line of gravity go through? (3)
Hip joint
Patella
Middle of the foot
What connects the upper limb to the trunk?
Mostly muscles to the scapula
Only bony connection is the clavicle
