Anatomical Landmarks Flashcards
name the 6 limiting structures for denture design
-labial frenum
-labial sulcus
-buccal frenum
-buccal sulcus
-hamular notch
-vibrating line
describe the labial frenum
-fibrous band covered by mucous membrane
- extends from labial aspect of residual ridge to lip
-has no active muscle fibres
what divides the labial sulcus into tis two compartments?
the labial frenum
what bounds the labial sulcus?
teeth, gingiva and residual alveolar ridge on one side
lip on other side
describe the buccal frenum
-fibrous band covered by mucous membrane
- has attachment of the elevator anguli oris, orbiculares oris and buccinator
what is the size of the buccal sulcus dependent on?
contraction of the buccinator muscle
position of the mandible
amount of bone loss in maxilla
what is the hamular notch?
-a depression situated between the maxillary tuberosity and the hamulus of the medial pterygoid plate
-soft area of loose connective tissue
what role does the hamular notch play in denture retention?
aids in achieving the posterior palatal seal
what is the vibrating line?
an imaginary line drawn across the posterior part of the palate that marks the division between movable and immovable tissue of the soft palate
how do you identify the vibrating line?
ask the pt to say ah
where does the vibrating line lie in relation to the palatine fovea?
usually 2mm infant
what are limiting structures?
the sites that guide us in having optimum extension of the denture, so as to engage maximum surface area without encroaching upon the muscle actions
what are relief areas?
areas where there re either resorption under constant load, have fragile structures within or are covered by a thin mucosa which can be easily traumatised
name 4 relief areas
crest of alveolar ridge
palatine fovea
incisive papilla
palatine raphe
