anarchism key concepts Flashcards
what area of agreement is there between anarchists about the state
they all agree that the state is corrupting and that power corrupts people at the top which makes life unequal.
goldman argues that voters give their power away to the state at the ballot box whilst giving people a false feeling of power
there needs to be a effort of the peeople to overthrow the state
freedom is the goal
what is the difference between individualists and collectivists of the problem of the state
individualists argue that the state should be abolished due to its over-regulation of free markets and the fact that in compromising peoples human natures that is individually motivated
collectivists argue that people are naturally collaborative and therefore the state doesn’t allow people to work together
hierarchy makes people exploit each-other
what disagreements are there between egoists and mutualists over how the state should be abolished
egoists such as max stirner believe that to abolish the state individuals need to make their own decision to boycott institutions and rise above them with will make the state crumble away due to no one using them.
for example not voting
muturalists such as proudhon however believe that a collective approach should be taken as to work together due to human nature being communist new insitutions shoul dbe created above the old ones
example of mutualism creation of new institutions?
The Black Panthers started a number of popular community social programs, including free breakfast programs for school children and free health clinics in 13 African American communities across the United States.
what disagreements are there between collectivists on how the state will be removed?
bakunin- propaganda by the deed. people should reject paying taxes and riot. this will show the public the brutality of the state and the police and it will show that the state isnt that powerful
kropotkin- however argues for an emerging revolution which is non violent and one of mutual aid with anarchist intellectuals helping ot resocilaise poeple and bring out their collecivst humannature to help
example for propganda by the deed
BLM and the police brutality seen then is an example of this shwoing the oppresive adn powerless side of the state
agreements between anarchists on the economy
state intervention needs to be abolished becuase the state uses the economy to contorl people and deprive them form action upon their natural human nature
however disagree on how state should be abolished
propaganda by deed v insurrection
collectivist anagrchists and stirners view on capitalism
collectivists and stirner aruge that capitalism is corrupting becuase it leads to competitions which reduced peoples liberty to make own deicisions based human nature (bakunin argues that this is becuase humansa re havilty infleunced by nature)
anarcho capitalists on the free market and capitalism
agree that capitalism needs to be changed but thinks the fundamental principles of it are positive.
the free market is the best and most effective way at buying and selling goods
and competition drives up standards
people work hard for the money they earn and so buy things with it
what do collectivsts think economic freedom looks like
once the state has been abolished economic freedom will look like mutual aids communities coming together and beneficially affecting people though collective ownership wehre the measn of production is shared and therfore capitalsim cannot exert oppression over people
proudhon on economic freedom
contractionalism
small productive independent associations of workers and a system of mutually beneficial exchange based on contracts freely entered into by individuals and associations.
Workers would receive the ‘true value’ of what they produced based on the labour time involved
anarcho capitalists on what economic freedom looks like
being able to buy and sell things under a regulaed free market where private entrepreneurs have the msot say over the markets rather than one overpowering state above.
based on a balence of interests between private entrepreneus
disagreements between individualists on private property
stirner- private property can be used as long as it satisfys your ego when somoen who’s ego needs it more it goes to them
anarcho-captialsits; beleive that people should be able to own their own private property if they work for it
disagreements between collectivsts on private property
all agree that private property is oppressive but disagree on the extent to which common ownership should be used
kropotkin argues that ‘all shouls belong to all’
whereas proudhon argues that private property is determined if its opressive therefore it is okay to own means of production and fruits of labour as long as you arent exploiting people through it
what are individualist’s views on human nature?
agree that humans are rational but argue that we are naturally individualistic and driven by own individual motivations. the state is therefore corrupting because it doesn’t give you the liberty and freedom that is natural to humans to be alturisic and make own decisions
