genre
a type of literary work, such as a short story, novel essay, play or poem
essay
any short composition in prose that undertakes to discuss a matter, express a point of view, or persuade us to accept a thesis on a subject
story
a narrative involving events, characters, and what the characters say and do
thesis
the main point or position that a writer develops and supports in an essay or other non-fictional composition
claim
an assertion that you actively attempt to prove through logic and various kinds of evidence
reason

all verifiable info. that a writer may use as support to an argument, such as facts, observations, examples, cases, data etc.
topic sentence

plan for an essay that includes complete sentence version of the thesis statement of the essay as well as of the topic sentence for each body paragraph
heading
lines at the beginning of the essay in MLA format containing info. about the student, professor, course, and due date. These lines take place on a separate cover page (header is at top right corner of each page which includes only the student’s last name and page number)
parenthetical reference
note in the body of an essay in MLA format that identifies the source of a citation by providing the author’s name and page number
block quotation
citation thats more than 4 lines and must be indented entirely on the left side
works cited
list of sources including bibliographical info. found at the end of an essay written in MLA format
