Analogical Transfer Flashcards
what causes people to draw upon analogical transfer?
the similarities in content of problems
what is analogical transfer and what is the main reason as to why people don’t use it often?
- analogical transfer is forming a solution to a problem from previous exposure or experience that links it to a similar problem and applying the solution from one problem to another.
- people fail to apply analogical transfer because they focus too much on the surface characteristics and specific details that are irrelevant to the problem
what is functional fixation?
functional fixation occurs when we dwell too much the particular function of an object, therefore limiting it from doing anything else
what is the biggest step on coming up with a solution?
finding the right way to conceptualize a problem
what was the main issue that was significant in the water jug problem? How was it ‘resolved’ in the experiment?
when people were given the simple question in the beginning, they used the simple solution as an alternative to other problems as well. When people were given the simple question in the end, they chose the harder solution to solve it.
