List the steps you would take to check the anaesthesia machine

A

-For piped gas: connect o2 and other gases to the correct pipelines and perform a tug test. Ensure there is emergency o2 available.
-For o2 cylinders: ensure there are 2. One full and one in use, turn on the valve for the one in use.
-Turn o2 flowmeter up to max and off again.
-Check for leaks: occlude the fresh gas outlet, turn o2 up to 4L/min and check that the o2 bobbin drops slightly.
-Operate the emergency flush, turn o2 off.
-Ensure all pressure gauges for pipelines connected to the machine indicate 400-500kPA.

How do you perform checks on the vaporiser?

A

-Ensure it is sitting correctly on the back bar of the machine and locked in place.
-Turn the dial and ensure it turns fully. Turn off.
-Ensure it is filled adequately.

How do you check the scavenging system?

A

-Ensure active scavenging pipe is connected to ceiling outlet
-Ensure end of scavenging is connected to the breathing system
-Ensure system is turned on. A visual check of the flow indicator in the air brake receiver should confirm this.
-If not using active scavenging, ensure the hose is connected to a charcoal absorber. This should be regularly weighed and replaced when max weight is reached.

How do you check the breathing system?

A

-Select approp system and ensure the correct bag size is on (TV x 6)
-Connect to fresh gas outlet
-Connect scavenging to circuit
-Leak test: close the APL valves and occlude patient end, turn on o2 and allow bag to fill fully, watch it to check for leaks. Turn o2 off and open valve fully.
-If using a circle, check the soda lime.
