Anaerobic respiration Flashcards

1
Q

What is the main difference between aerobic and anaerobic respiration?

A

Aerobic respiration uses oxygen to break down glucose, anaerobic respiration does not

Q

When does anaerobic respiration take place?

A

When there is not enough oxygen for aerobic respiration to take place - often during strenuous exercise

Q

What are the 2 reasons that the body normally respires aerobically?

A

1) Aerobic respiration releases more energy than anaerobic respiration
2) Lactic acid causes painful muscle cramps

Q

How is bread made?

A

Flour, water and yeast are mixed together. The yeast ferments the glucose in the flour into carbon dioxide and ethanol. The carbon dioxide is trapped in the dough and makes the bread rise. The ethanol evaporates during baking.

Q

How is beer and wine made?

A

Fermenting barley grains (beer) and grapes (wine). The yeast ferments the sugar into alcohol
