Aerobic respiration Flashcards
What do our bodies need energy for?
Movement, growth, warmth, chemical reactions
Where does our energy come from?
Organic molecules in the food we eat
What is aerobic respiration?
A chemical reaction which releases energy from glucose when it reacts with oxygen
What are the reactants in aerobic respiration?
Oxygen and glucose
What are the products of aerobic respiration?
Carbon dioxide, water and energy
Where does respiration happen?
In the mitochondria (organelles within cells)
What type of cells contain many mitochondria?
Muscles cells
Why do muscle cells contain many mitochondria?
They need a lot of energy to be able to move
What is glucose?
A sugar found in food
How does glucose enter the blood stream?
By diffusion
How does glucose reach the cells?
It is dissolved into the blood plasma (the liquid part of blood)
How does oxygen enter the blood stream?
It diffuses from the lungs into the blood
How does oxygen reach the cells?
Carried by the red blood cells
Name the component in red blood cells that joins to oxygen?
Haemoglobin
How does carbon dioxide leave the body?
Carbon dioxide diffuses out of the cells, into the blood plasma and then diffuses into the lungs where is is exhaled
