Anaerobic respiration Flashcards
1
Q
where does it occur?
A
the cytoplasm
2
Q
what is the first step?
A
glycosis
3
Q
what happens after glycosis?
A
the 2 pyruvate molecules are reduced by gaining a hydrogen from reduced NAD to form ethanol and CO2 (in plants) or lactate (in animals). this then oxidises NAD so it can be recycled in glycosis.
4
Q
what are the products in plants?
A
ethanol + CO2
5
Q
what are the products in animals?
A
lactate
6
Q
how is NAD reused in glycosis?
A
it is oxidised by reduced NAD
7
Q
how efficient is anaerobic respiration?
A
even less than aerobic, because only 2 ATP molecules are produced from 1 glucose molecule, instead of 4
