Anaerobes Generalities Flashcards
What is the result of catalase test?
Catalase negative
To what they are sensitive?
To oxygen free radicals
Do they produce diseases alone?
No they cause polymicrobial infections
What are the general manifestations of infection with anaerobes?
Foul smelling discharge or bad breath
Gas production
Polymicrobal infections
Proximity to a mucosal surface
What’s the typical outcome of an infection?
Abscess formation
Why they are not invasive normally? When do they produce disease?
Since they are part of our normal flora
Once they are pushed out of their place and the right conditions are met, they multiply and produce abscess and attract other bacteria
Which one are part of the normal flora of the mouth and colon?
Peptostreptococcus and veillonella
Which one are important for women? What do they produce?
Lactobacillus
They produce acids that give protection in the genital area
From which infections and clinical specimens anaerobic gram-positive cocci or isolated?
Blood cultures Central nervous system including brain abscesses Head and neck infections including ear Dental abscess and infected root canals Periodontal diseases and infected oral implants Human and animal bites Pleural infections Abdominal infections Genito urinary tract infections Decubitus ulcers Foot ulcers Osteomyelitis
Why did the dentist give broad-spectrum antibiotics when there is a tooth abscess?
Since dental abscesses are a good example of polymicrobial bacterial infection
Why deep abscesses have a very high fatality rate?
Because it is hard to be reached by either antibiotics or immune system
Which bacteria causes gram-negative bacteremia?
Bacteroides fragilis
