Anaemias Flashcards
Megaloblastic anaemia
Most common cause macrocyclic anaemia
Deficiency vit B12, folic acid, both
B12 deficiency also neurological symptoms
Inc. pernicious anaemia
Can be caused by gastric bypass, reduced absorption
Macrocytic anaemia examples
Megaloblastic anaemia
Hypothyroidism
Alcoholism
Methotrexate (inhibits DNA replication)
Pernicious anaemia
Macrocytic, megaloblastic anaemia
Lack of intrinsic factor
So can’t absorb vit B12
Due to autoimmune vs parietal cells, or vs IF itself
Hypothyroidism
Causes macrocytic anaemia
Microcytic Anaemia
Iron deficiency
Haemoglobin synthesis failure
Iron deficiency anaemia
Macrocytic anaemia
Insufficient uptake / absorption
Blood loss from GI tract
Worldwide - parasitic causes
Normocytic anaemia
Acute blood loss
Anaemia of chronic disease
Aplastic anaemia (bone marrow failure)
Haemolytic anaemia
