Anaemia Overview Flashcards
What is it?
Reduced total red cell mass
Marker for anaemia?
Hb conc
Classification of anaemias by?
MCV (mean cell/corpuscular volume)
Classification of anaemias
Microcytic
Macrocytic
Normocytic
Normocytic anaemia?
Normal sized cells
Causes of normocytic anaemia?
Acute blood loss Anaemia of chronic disease Marrow infiltration/fibrosis Endocrine disease Haemolytic anaemias
Other term for microcytic anaemia?
Hypochromic
What is hypochromic anaemia due to?
Deficient Hb synthesis
What is the result of the Hb defect in microcytic anaemia?
Small cells because cells keep dividing as they try to accumulate Hb because not adequate one to trigger to stop dividing
Mots common cause pf microcytic anaemia?
Iron deficiency
All causes of microcytic anaemia?
T- Thalassaemia A-Anaemia of chronic disease I-Iron deficiency L-Lead poisoning S- Sideroblastic anaemia
Classification of macrocytic anaemia?
Megaloblastic
Non-megaloblastic
What is megaloblastic anaemia?
Problem with nuclear maturation
2 main causes of megaloblastic macrocytic anaemia?
Folate/B12 deficiency
Causes of non-megaloblastic anaemia?
Alcohol
Liver disease
Hypothyroidism
Marrow failure
