AN - studies Flashcards
what are the studies for AN?
Valentine et al (2010) - classic
Guardia et al (2012) - contemporary
valentine et al - aim
usefulness of psycho-educational material provided via group work for offender patient in a high security psychiatric hospital
valentine et al - sample
42 male patients detained under the mental health act
valentine et al - procedure
4 20-session UMI groups run over 3 yrs (small discussions + presentations) groups typically consisted of 9 patients + facilitators
two outcome measure given pre and post op:
- CORE-OM
- SCQ
semi-structured interview conducted with lead researcher to evaluate experience - content analysed for themes
valentine et al - CORE-OM
clinical outcomes in routine evaluation - outcome measure
assessed 4 domains
- subject well-being
- problems/symptoms
- social functioning
- risk to others
low score = fewer problems
valentine et al - SCQ
self concept questionaire
30 item questionaire that measures self-esteem
has high test-retest reliability
good clinical validity
valentine et al - findings
inferential statistics to make comparisons between groups (completers + non-completers)
- no significant difference between pre- and post test between groups
CORE-OM: significant changes across all 4 scales (only one showed reliable changes)
SCQ: more cases of reliable change - over 50% reported improved self-esteem
valentine et al - conclusion
absence of reliable changes warrants attention
further consideration of negative changes in ppts
qualitative analysis of interview showed patients valued the sense of hope + empowerment provided
valentine et al - strengths
questionnaires were standardised + statistical testing used - look and pre and post tests result differences.
same questions asked before and after - reliable
both qualitative + quantitative - can verify each other
valentine et al - weaknesses
bias in measures used e.g. medication changes - controlled by pharmacists rather than the ppts
offenders are likely to have severe problems and complex needs
