Explain the Paris Peace conference
Started in Jan. 1919, led to the Treaty of Versaillies. redrew central Europe, attended by all major powers. led to the LON. Founded to prevent war and achieve peace.
Analyse the Treaty of Versailles
Signed June 28th, 1919, Hall of Mirrors in the Palace of Versailles. - Between Germany vs British Empire, France, Italy, Japan, and the US ( Allied leaders) Terms: - Alsace-Lorraine given to France - reduced army - lost territory -guilt clause - respirations
Treaty of Versailles on an economic level
- Germany was to pay 132 million gold marks in respirations
- borrowing money in order to pay led to inflation
War Guilt Clause - Article 231, held Germany accountable for the complete blame for the cause of ww1
Treaty of Versailles on a political/social level
Mutinies- rebellions against political authority
Abdication of Kaiser and imperial government led to threat of socialism, democratic government under Friedrich Ebert
- distrust of the Weimar rebublic and eventually collapse
- harsh treatment led to growth of german nationalism, allowing for hitler to harness the unstable politics and rise to power
- loss of territory (13% of land and territory) Alsace-Lorraine given back to France

german army reduced to 100,000 men, no tanks, no air force, no more than 6 naval ships, and submarines

- Ludendorf supported democracy to shift blame onto the democrats - propaganda against the left. Also contributed to Hitlers discontent and anger - he went to politics

allowed for the president to take emergency measures without consent of the Reichstag
