An Introduction to the Human Body Flashcards
What is Anatomy
science of body structures and the relationships among them
Define physiology
the science of bodyfunctions—how the body parts work
Levels of structural organization in the human body (6)
Chemical, cellular, tissue, organ, system, organismal
Define Anabolism
building up of complex chemical sub- stances from smaller, simpler components
What are the basic life process? (6)
Metabolism, responsiveness, movement, growth, differentiation, reproduction
Define movement
motion of the whole body, individual organs, single cells, and even tiny structures inside cells
Define differentiation
development of a cell from an unspecialized to a specialized state.
What is Homeostasis
maintaining the volume and composition of body fluids, including ICF, ECF
What are the three components to feedback system
Receptor, control center, effector
What is a prone and supine position?
prone is a body lying facing down; supine is one facing up
What is an anterior/ posterior position?
Nearer to or at the front of the body; Nearer to or at the back of the body.
What are the three body cavities
Cranial cavity, thoracic cavity, Abdominopelvic cavity
What is included in cranial cavity
vertebral canal
What is included in thoracic cavity
Pleural cavity (lung), Pericardial cavity, Mediastinum
What is viscera
Organs inside the thoracic and abdominopelvic cavities
