Leadership Definition Early v Present
Early: charismatic leaders and bureaucratic leaders; leaders tell subordinates what to do
Present: Leadership is a process by which a person influences a group of individuals to establish and achieve a goal
Trait Leadership
Certain individuals have innate traits, qualities
ie:tall attractive, extrovert, intelligence, charisma
Process Leadership
Leadership resides in interactions between leaders and followers ; it can be learned
Assigned Leadership
Based on occupying a positing in an organization
Emergent Leadership
Based on other people’s perception of who is the most influential
ie: participation rate or seniority
Manager v Leader
Manager: day to day problem solver, task manager
Leader: influencer who develops new approaches for the future
Autocratic Leadership
classic approach, maintains unilateral approach over followers
Democratic Leadership
participative leadership, encourage followers to collaborate on decision making
Laissez-Faire Leadership
little to no direction is provided to followers yet the leader remains responsible
