Act 1
Socialist ideas. She realises that people in the working class should still be seen as people not “cheap labour”
Sticks up for what she believes in.
“If she’d been some miserable plain little creature, I don’t suppose I’d have done it. But she was very pretty and looked as if she could take care of herself”
Tries to justify her actions against Eva
Becomes defensive when the Inspector questions her.
“Creature”- she doesn’t see them as human
“(eagerly) I know I’m to blame- and I’m desperately sorry”
Act 2
She is eager to blame herself- feels bad about her actions
She wants to know how she can become better
“We all started like that’s so confident, so pleased with ourselves until he began asking questions”
Realises that they have to change.
They were arrogant and now she knows that her actions can hurt people.
“(rather wildly, with a laugh) No, he’s giving us the rope- so we’ll hang ourselves”
She knows that he manipulated them to reveal their secrets.
“Hang ourselves”-he allowed them to realise their mistakes and feel guilt about it.
“(flaring up) It’s you two who are being childish- trying not to face the facts”
Act 3
Knows that her parents haven’t changed- she tries to make them realise that what they’ve done is bad.
