When the play was written and when it was set
Written in 1945 but set in 1912. The dates are significant as it set two years before WW1 broke out and written a year after WW2 ended. Priestley believed that major wars bring dramatic changes and that they can only be prevented through mutual respect between countries.
The creation of the Welfare State
Priestly became aware and very concerned about the consequences of social inequality. In 1942, him and a few others set up a new political party called the Common Wealth Party that fought for public ownership of the land, greater democracy and a new ‘morality’ in politics.
Role of women in society
Inequality between men and women.
Women seen as property
If born into the lower class and were struggling, they would have to sell their bodies (prostitute)
People in the working class
The lives of people in the working class was difficult. They were required to work most of their lives. The upper classes abused them and their rights. They were taught to work hard and they would get somewhere (capitalist views)
People in the upper class

Those from the 19th century- supported the idea of ‘self-help’ - people have a responsibility to work hard and provide for themselves.
People in the middle class

If from the 20th century- they would believe in ‘welfare’ - the idea that the fortunate had a moral responsibility to look after the less fortunate.
