What does this mean?
Uses dramatic irony to emphisize his arrogance.
It gives the audience a lack of faith in the character from the start knowing what really happes to the tianic
Mr.Birling:
“We’ve been had that’s all”
What does this mean/show?
This expresses how he doesn’t care now that the inspector is fake. This show his capitalist views and not caring for the lower classes.
Mrs Birling:
“Girls of that class”
What does this show?
This present Mrs Birling’s capitalist views seeing people by their class. Draws distiction between her and Eva.
Mrs Birling:
“I was the only one who didn’t give in to him”
She wants to maintain a sense of superiority and respect claiming she was the only one to not break down.
Sheila:
“ Oh – Gerald – you’ve got it is it the one you wanted me to have? … Look mummy, isn’t a beauty!”
This highlights Sheila’s inocence and Obidence
being presented as a steryo typical young woman in the early 1900s
Sheila:
“It’s you two who are being childish – trying not to face the facts.”
This proves how women are stong, powerful and dominant now Shiela has become more mature and more human views around Eva’s death.
Eric:
“Why shouldn’t they try for higher wages? We try for the highest possible prices.”
Eris has been succumbed to his parent’s selfish capitalist views.
Eric:
“The girl’s dead and we all killed her”
Eric excepts responsibility unlike his parents.
Gerald:
“She was young and pretty and warm-hearted - and intensely grateful.”
Gerald speaks highly of her and is clearly flattered by how much she appreciates him. This leads him to controlling and seducing Eva due to his lust driven thought process.
Inspector:
“One Eva Smith has gone – but there are millions and millions and
millions of Eva Smiths and John Smiths still left with us”
Explains how there are many people who are desperate by using repetition to encourage the audience to be better and sympathetic for less fortunate people.
Inspector:
“if men
will not learn that lesson, then they well be taught it in fire and bloody and anguish.”
Foreshadows the second world war and how fire blood and anguish will reemerge
Mr Birling:
“I care. I was almost certain for a knighthood in the next Honours List”
Wants to climb the social ladder but thinks too high o himself and due to his anger and ruthlessness. This is his main priority so when it comes to Eva’s death all he cares about is his reputation.
Gerald:
I’m rather more – upset – by this business than I probably appear to be.
He is beginning to realise what he has done what he has done wrong.
Gerald:
It may have all been nonsense
He is now shifting back to his former mindset now that nobody will know about his involvement and not feeling at all guilty.
