An Inspector Calls Flashcards
The Inspector : His roles in the play
-Dramatic catalyst (themes of time)
-Moral subconscious (Especially for shiela)
-Interrogator (for Mr & Mrs Birling)
-Moral Teacher (Final speach)
-A proxy for the voice of JB Priestley
-A spirit (Goole - Ghoul)
The Inspector : Links to a Christmas Carol
-There is a lot of evidence to support the idea that the inspector may not be real, but is instead a spirt
-This links the play to the ideas of Charles Dickins, especially that of a Christmas carol as in both the supernatural haunt people into changing.
-That being said, Priestley is far more pessimistic, as while Dickens believed that even a man as vile as scrooge could change, Mr and Mrs Birling refuse to change. They stay horrid throughout.
