- used to speed up pace, create urgency, tension or rising emotion as the reader is pulled from one line to the next
Technical Terminology : Alliteration
Where a sequence of words all begin with the same letter
- used to provide an audible pulse to the poem. Gives it a lulling, lyrical and/or emotive effect
Technical Terminology : Hyperbole
Over - exaggeration
- Used to create emphasis or humour
Technical Terminology : Onomatopoeia
Words that sounds like the noise that it describes
- used to heighten the language beyond the words on the page. Creates particularly vivid imagery
Technical Terminology : Pathetic fallacy
Where the weather/natural environment reflects the mood
Technical Terminology : Tone
the type of voice or atmosphere that pervades the poem, e.g. sadness, anger, joy, regret, melancholy
- it is largely meant to set the mood or feel of a poem for the reader. It allows the poet to control the way the poem is to be read.
