Amyloid Flashcards
what is the most common type of systemic amyloid in western countreis?
Amyloid L Protein - develop from plasma cells producing immunoglobulin light chains t
Chronic inflammation is associated with formation of what amyloid?
AA amyloid protein - which is due to macrophage activation 1 and 6 which prompts liver ot produce SAA protein which may misfold to produce AA amyloid
what synthesizes AL amyloid?
synthesized from ‘plasma cells’ (remember Leukocyte)
what synthesizes AA amyloid?
the liver
What condition results in the productin of multiple myeloma?
Multiple Myeloma - which is a neoplastic condition of plasma cells which make little lesions int he bone
Amyoloid A (AA) is found in what condition?
it is associated with prolonged uncontrolled inflmmation like RA or Chron’s disease, or osteomyelitis
it’s related to acute phase reactants and production of IL 6
not everyone gets it, so we hypothesize that there is fundamental difference between those who do
What is senile systemic amyloidosis?
accumulation of transthyretin - which is a normal protein used for trnaposrt of retinol - it accumulates and forms amyloid
Describe endocrine associated amyloid
amyloids of the exocrine/endocrine pancreus
endocrine:tumours which produce amyloid in the islet cells of the pancreus
exocrine tumours cna also cause amyloid in the pancreas
what are the effects of amyloid?
it is a slow burner- you need a lot of it to accumulate systemic effects - so by the time you see symptoms = very far into disease
causes narrowing of the vessels and atrophy of the tissue - (pressure related/ impaired blood flow)
can cause organ enlargement
amyloid deposition in the blood vessels leads to what?
may weaken the wall and lead to haemorrhage
may deposit in the kidney (glomeruli, interstitisum and arterioles)
which causes proteinuria and nephrotic syndrome
