AMT 212 WEEK 2 PPT 3 Flashcards
Types of reciprocating engine configuration
- Radial engine
- In-Line engine
- V-Type engine
- Opposed or Flat type engine
Methods of cooling
- Air cooled
- Liquid Cooled
- ____ engines has
metal fins in the
cylinder which are
called cooling fins. - The part of the cylinder
which has more cooling
fins is near the exhaust
manifold or exhaust
valve.
Air cooled engines
the
heat is transferred from the
cylinders to the coolant,
which is sent through tubing
and cooled within a radiator
placed in the air stream
Liquid cooled engine
Disadvantages of liquid cooled engine
Added weight of coolant,
heat exchanger (radiator),
water pump, and tubing.
An ____ generally has an even
number of cylinders that are aligned in a
single row parallel with the crankshaft
* This engine may be liquid cooled or air
cooled and has only one crankshaft.
Inline Engine
Two designs of an Inline engine:
- Inverted inline engine- The cylinder is located
below the crankshaft. - Upright inline engine- The cylinder is located
above the crankshaft.
Inline Engine advantages
- An in-line engine has a
comparatively small frontal
area and, therefore, allows
for better streamlining and
less drag. - Inverted inline engines has
its crankshaft higher off the
ground. Higher crankshaft
allows greater propeller
ground clearance which, in
turn, permitted the use of
shorter landing gear.
Inline engines disadvantages
- Have relatively low
power-to-weight ratios. - The rearmost cylinder
of an air-cooled inline
engine receive less
cooling.
The ____ has at least two
banks of cylinders
directly opposite of each
other with a crankshaft
in the center.
Opposed Engines
- A ____ consists of a
row, or rows of cylinders
arranged radially about a
central crankcase.
Radial engine
The number of cylinders which
make up a row may be three,
five, seven or nine.
Radial engines
Some ____ have two
rows of seven or nine cylinders
arranged radially about the
crankcase, on in front of the
other in a staggered
arrangement. These are called
double-row radials.
