Who do the 5 Amrit Dhari Sikhs represent?
The Panj Pyare (the 5 beloved)
where does the ceremony take place?
In the Gurdwara, in the presence of the Guru Granth Sahib
What do the Panj Pyare do first?
they explain the Sikh principles and teachings to the candidates and ask if they accept the
what are candidates questioned on?
serving humanity, praying to only one God etc.
what happens when the candidates accept Sikhism?
The Ardas prayer is read and a portion of the Guru Granth Sahib is read
What does the Amrit consist of?
it is prepared by the panj pyare- mixture of water and sugar which is mixed into a steel bowl (bata) using the Khanda (double- edged sword)
What do the panj pyare do to the amrit?
they take turns stirring it with their right hand while reciting 5 prayers taken form the Guru Granth Sahib
what are the 5 prayers?
the Japji, the Jap, Swayyas, Chaupai Sahib and the Anand of Guru Amar Das
what do the panj pyare do while stirring the amrit?
they will sit in a special position called the Bir Asan, they are crouched on one knee showing that they are always prepared to defend their faith
What happens when the amrit has been prepared?
another prayer is offered to the candidates and are called in to receive amrit
How is amrit given to the candidates?
they receive amrit in their hands 5 times as they recite “Waheguru ji ka Khalsa, waheguru ji ki fateh” (the Khalsa is of God, the victory is God’s)
After they receive amrit, how is it sprinkled on them?
amrit is sprinkled on their eyes 5 times- symbolises opening eyes to a Gurmukh life rather than a Manmukh life
it is then sprinkled in their hair 5 times, with their turban partly open
What happens last?
the candidates take a sip of amrit form the same bowl- emphasises equality as everyone is drinking form the same bowl
