Amphetamines Flashcards

1
Q

Amphetamines

A

-reverses the direction
-causes the sporadic release of DA + NE
-inhibits the enzymes that break down NE + DA
-all three increase DA + NE

Q

Why do we use Amphetamines for ADHD?

A

-all symptoms of ADHD can be linked to an area of the brain
-Prefrontal cortex is asleep and needs to wake up to pay attention

Q

Areas of the brain linked to ADHD

A
  • Dorsal Acc - Selective Attention
  • Pre Frontal Cortex - hyperactive symptoms
-Dorsal Lateral PFC - sustained attention + problem solving
    -Orbitofrontal cortex - impulsive symptoms

Q

What do ADHD meds do?

A

–Low levels of NE in people with ADHD. Ritalin + Adderall increase NE
- Locus Correus talks to Prefrontal Cortex -> makes a lot of NE (Adderall blocks NE transporter)
-glutamate from a2 NE receptor depolarizes cell

Q

Ritalin & Cocaine

Q

What happens if you take Adderall and you weren’t prescribed?

A

-adderall is fixing an imbalance so it affects people differently for someone who doesn’t have ADHD
-theres an optimal level of NE + DA that its optimal for focus. An excessive amount of NE+DA makes you stressed and too little makes you fatigued

Q

Amphetamines & Seizures

A
  • seizures are caused by excitotoxicity which is too much glutamate in the synapse
  • Theres an increase glutamate release from Adderall and too much can cause a seizure
