mechanisms of action
inhibit bacterial protein synthersis (bactericidal)
primary uses
aerobic gram negative bacteria (E. coli, Klebsiella, Proteus, Pseudomonas), mycobacteria, & protozoans.
Usually given parenterally: poorly absorbed from GI tract
Occasionally PO to sterilize bowel prior to intestinal surgery
adverse effects
: limited use related to potential for serious adverse effects
Pain or inflammation at injection site, rash, fever, nausea, diarrhea, dizziness, tinnitus, Anaphylaxis, nephrotoxicity, neurotoxicity manifesting as ototoxicity, superinfections
gentamincin
Primary use: serious respiratory, urinary, nervous, & GI infections
Effective against some strains of MRSA
neomycin: topical infections of skin, eyes, ears
paromomycin, (Humatin): PO to treat parasitic infections
Used with treatment with PCN is contraindicated
