Amino Acids & Peptides Flashcards
NON-POLAR (Neutral) Amino acids
Hydrophobic w/ hydrocarbon (Alkyl or Aromatic) side chains
POLAR (Neutral) Amino acids
Hydrophilic w/ polar or ionic side chains
POLAR Acidic Amino acids
Hydrophilic w/ acidic side chains (-COOH)
POLAR Basic Amino acids
Hydrophilic w/ -NH2 side chains
Dipeptide
A MOLECULE containing TWO amino acids joined by a peptide bond
Tripeptide
A MOLECULE containing THREE amino acids joined by a peptide bond
Polypeptide
A MACROMOLECULE containing MANY amino acids joined by a peptide bond
Protein
A BIOLOGICAL MACROMOLECULE containing AT LEAST 40 amino acids joined by a peptide bond
C-terminal Amino acid
Amino acid at the end of the chain have free –COO- group (always written at the right)
N-terminal Amino acid
Amino acid at the end of the chain having free —NH3+ group (always written at the left)
pH Level 6-7
Zwitterion (Neutral)
Positive (+) = Negative (-)
pH Level 3 or Less
—COO- acts as a BASE & ACCEPTS H+
pH Level 10 or Higher
—NH3+ acts as an ACID & LOSES H+
