Amino Acids Flashcards
Learn amino acids
What are the substituted methane in amino acids?
Substituted methane are the groups that occupy the four valency positions of carbon.
In amino acids they are Amino group, carboxylic group, hydrogen and variable R group
Why are amino acids known as alpha amino acids?
Because all the groups attach to the alpha carbon
Amino acid in which the R group is hydrogen
Glycine
Amino acid in which the R group is a methyl group
Alanine
Amino acid in which the R group is hydroxy methyl
Serine
What are the essential amino acids?
Lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, tryptophan, valine, isoluecine, leucine, threonine
Semiessential amino acids are
The ones our body synthesis very slowly
Histidine and arginine
Non essential amino acids are
Alanine, serine, glycine, proline, glutamate(glutamic acid) , cysteine, aspartate (aspartic acid), cystine, hydroxyproline
Acidic amino acids
Extra cooh group
Glutamate (glutamic acid) aspartate (aspartic acid)
Basic amino acids
Extra amine group
Arginine, Lysine
Neutral amino acids
Valine, Alanine, glycine, isoleucine, leucine
Sulphur containing amino acids
Cysteine, cystine, methionine
Aromatic amino acids
Phenylalanine, tryptophan, tryosine
Heterocyclic amino acids
Proline, hydroxyproline, Histidine
Zwitter ions
Have two ionic groups, NH³+ and COO-
Zwitter is German word for hermaphrodite
*** AMINO ACID CAN NEVER EXIST AS UNCHARGED GROUP REGARDLESS OF PH, therefore the structure of amino acid changes in different pH
Oligopeptide
When a few amino acids are joined by peptide bonds
Polypeptide
When many amino acids are joined together
Enkephalins
Short peptides
Formed in central nervous system that bind to receptors in certain cells of the brain and induces analgesia
Amantin
Extremely toxic mushrooms of peptides
Components of urea cycle
Ornithine and citrulline
Tryosine conversions
To thyroxin, melanin, and adrenaline
Glycine
Heme
Tryptophan
Vitamin nictotinamide (B³) and indole 3 acetic acid
Histamine
For functioning of muscles blood capillaries and gastric juices
