Why was the Railroad built
To transport goods for trade from the west to the east (central Pacific) and east to the west (Union Pacific). Brought out supplies like timber and encouraged trade, for example, cattle to the east
Problems and solutions with the railroad
Labour shortages - Chinese workers included racism Indian tribes - Army defence Geography of America (mountains, rivers) Funding Lawlessness Social issues - gambling, prostitution Distance (east to west)
Impact on America because of the Railroad
People made westward migration, and communication with the East became much easier
Why were railroads important
The railroad shortened the journey and made the journey safer. (Before the terrain was horrendous as you had to climb mountains - either Rockies or Sierra Nevada). This grew cities/towns and could sell land to settlers
Did the Government solve any problems in accordance with the railroad
Gave grants, land and funding. Improved technology by building bridges. Brought in Chinese immigrants (7,000-10,000) along with Irish workers. Ex soldiers from the civil war acted as workers which, in turn, the government gave more money for and made the government to unite the USA
