People moving West with no intention of settling
People wanting something much better, further West (California/Oregon)
Problems they faced
5 months to travel 2000 miles on horseback

Indians could attack (they needed weapons)
Disease (they could take a doctor so illnesses are cured quickly so they don’t spread)

Discovery of Gold
Farmers to farm in California
Fur to create clothes and then sell on
Impact on America
The fur created clothes that kept them warm in winter but cold in summer
They made Indians angrier as people were travelling across where the Indians had settled, although it wasn’t legally theirs
Factors that helped them
There was fur everywhere so supplies were never limited

Factors that hindered them
Indians attacking - they couldn’t really do much until they produced weapons as well
Geography - flat apart from Rockies and Sierra Nevada mountains
Weather - hot in summer, freezing in winter and dry
